Freedom of Information Act: The Department of the Navy's (DON) Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the Navy's Senior Military Component Official for the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). FOIA laws give individuals the right to make requests for federal agency records. The DON CIO provides department policy and oversight to the Navy and USMC FOIA offices to ensure that requested records are made available, unless those records are protected from disclosure by specific FOIA exemptions. The goal of the DON is to create a cohesive and effective knowledge-sharing environment throughout the FOIA community using the latest technological tools while simultaneously safeguarding sensitive information in response to FOIA requests.
