HALAWA, Hawaii (Aug. 7, 2024) A gap remains after Navy Closure Task Force-Red Hill (NCTF-RH) contractors removed a 20-inch spool pipe outside fuel tank 6 prior to installing a forced air ventilation system at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility (RHBFSF) in Halawa, Hawaii on Aug. 7, 2024. The tank ventilation and air monitoring procedures have undergone rigorous modeling and regulatory scrutiny to ensure the safety of the surrounding community while allowing workers to safely enter and clean the interior of the tanks. Charged with the safe decommissioning of the facility, NCTF-RH was established by the Department of the Navy as a commitment to the community and the environment, and continues to engage with the people of Hawaii, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders as it safely and deliberately decommissions the RHBFSF.
